“God Bless Texas”

In July, many families said goodbye to their loved ones after the horrific floods that ravaged the Texas Hill Country on the 4th of July. I felt compelled to write separately about this heart-wrenching disaster.

Like many of you reading this post, I often think of the victims and pray for their families. We’ve offered donations of time, talent, and treasure. Some of us traveled to the scene to help with search and rescue efforts. Others used their skills to make small coffins, while many sent money and basic living essentials. The outpouring was so great that at one point, we were asked to stop collecting items. I love how, as Americans/Texans, we always step up to love our neighbors in the most remarkable ways.

Yet, in this case, nothing seems to soothe the heartache that overtakes me when I think of the families who lost their loved ones. I often reflect on the families of the precious little campers. Going away to Christian camp is a part of my children’s story. The anticipation was in the air for weeks, followed by the stories my husband and I would hear once they returned home. “Returned home” is the key phrase. No one imagined that these honeys, and others, would now be resting in their eternal homes.

I am going to continue praying for the families and support causes that help keep their spirits and stories with us.  I just heard a song written by Annabel Dwyer called Heaven in the Hills. It is such a beautiful tribute. Maybe we can all use our gifts and resources to provide love, hope, and healing. May we overwhelm our neighbors in Kerr County, Texas, with love and support as they recover. So many have lost everything. Let’s help them restore their lives. They need us.  We need each other.

God, please hear our cries for the families of those you’ve called home, and for the survivors. Show up in ways beyond our wildest imaginations. Hear our prayers for our neighbors. God bless Texas!
